Overview

Tamarindo Beach

The wave here used to be very hollow but over the years the sandbar shifted and now it’s a complete different story. This spot is suitable for all levels of surfers. Waves peel to the right and left at El Estero. This spot is easy to reach from most of the hotels in Tamarindo, just look out for the river.

Grande Beach

This spot, north of Tamarindo, is well known for its barrels. So don’t expect to have this beach break for your own! Actually it can get very crowded at this surf spot! You can also anticipate large crowds over holidays like Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Easter Week. The wave, which breaks to the left and right, is very consistent and best surfed at mid to almost high tide. This wave breaks good when the swell is small to medium. It can get big but closes out on big swells.

Langosta Beach

There are various breaks in Langosta that can get good. River mouth breaks to the left and right over a reef and sand. Watch out for crocodiles close to the river! This wave is best surfed at mid-tide. Than there is this spot called Sapo, which breaks in front of the Barcelo Langosta hotel. Surf this, left and right breaking wave, during low tide. It’s a half hour walk to Playa Langosta from Tamarindo or a very short drive. You can park in front of the spot and walk down to the beach on a small trail

Avellanas Beach

The best known spot here is Little Hawaii. This voluminous wave can hold big swells. The waves shapes nice during low tide, watch out for the shallow reef! This solid right is at the northern end of the beach. El Palo (trunk) breaks in front of the dead tree on the beach. A great beach break with breaks to both sides. Surf this wave during high tide with a medium swell.

Marbella Beach

A beach break with good lefts and rights. The bottom is sandy, but watch out for the rocks! This spot is best surfed during mid tide falling to low tide. Small and medium swells generate the best waves here, the swell should be less than 6 feet. This beach needs swell from the South and the Northwest. During low tide you can get tubed here. This is no secret spot at all, when the conditions are good it can get crowded in the water.
